What Are Backlinks?
Keeping it very simple, Backlinks can be defined as a “vote” by one trusted website for some other website. These backlinks can also be termed as “incoming links”, “inbound links” or “one way links”.
Backlinks are considered as one of the very important aspect of SEO(Search Engine Optimization), that comes under the domain of Digital Marketing.
Websites or web pages with a high number of backlinks tend to appear in the top search results and have high search engine rankings.
Google and other search engines use a mechanism to rank the websites on the basis of some signals like authority of the website, content, localization, entities etc. We shall discuss that in detail later. For now, here is an example of the backlink.
Why Are Backlinks Important?
As already told, backlinks help the search engines to rank the website based on trust, authority, credibility, worth etc. Therefore backlinks are important for higher ranking of a website.
The more number of backlinks a website has, the chances for its better visibility increases whenever a user searches for a related query.
The concept of backlinks laid the foundation of Google’s algorithm called “PageRank”. Backlinks still hold an important place even after google has made tremendous changes in its algorithm since then.
You need to know that among many signals, used to decide the ranking of a website, backlinks are still a key ranking factor.
Types of Backlinks
Technically there are only two types of backlinks:
Dofollow : It tells the search engines that the targeted website has not purchased the link and, the backlink is original and organic.
Dofollow links tell Google or any other search engine that the content on the target website is valuable and needs to be put on a higher rank.
Nofollow : On the contrary, nofollow links are not that important and are less common at the same time. Both of these links look similar but a nofollow link tells the search engines not to follow this link. The key to differentiate between them is to locate the html anchor tag with an attribute (rel=”nofollow”) within the anchor tag.
Though, a normal visitor of the website would never be able to distinguish between the two. The reason being that the difference lies in the source code that completely alters the impact of a backlink on the website’s ranking.
Interesting thing to note here is that here even though nofollow links are less valuable. There should be an adequate balance between both of them to maintain a good ranking of the website.
Well that was quite a knowledge, isn’t it? what if I tell you we have come up with two more parts of this chapter. I can assure you, you would never want to miss those serious notes. Well not until if you need serious traffic.
